Desseins Éternels: The Organ at Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, Glasgow, Scotland Ambling through the enormous halls of the fine Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum at Glasgow with all its glory and beauty I thought of music. That was easy because the great hall is dominated by this huge late-romantic organ. Constructed by Lewis & Co. of London in 1901 for the Glasgow International Exhibition it was after that event moved to its present position. Restored in 1951 (after war damage) and in 1988 it is now a joy to behold and to hear. In many ways music is eternally alive and it contrasts wonderfully with museum displays of stuffed creatures and the inventions and art of yesteryear, however marvellous they may still be. When I was a boy I was told about William Thomson, the later first Baron Kelvin (1824-1907) (named after River Kelvin which with the Clyde structures Glasgow on whose banks Thomson's university stands). I shivered about the temperature scale named after him, thanked him for fresh ham from the fridge (originally in a slightly other form called the Kelvinator), and was intrigued by his theory of light waves. And there's a connection between his theories and the organ as well. In a lecture given at Philadelphia in 1884 precisely on the light-wave theory of light, he used at great length parallels with the vibrations of organ pipes to clarify his insights. A great scholar of physics but a curious man as well - at once avant-garde scientist and Christian fundamentalist - he would have nothing to do with Darwin and Wallace's ideas on the origin of species (he also thought airplanes physically impossible...) and certainly nothing with the eternity of the world. But of music being eternal he must have thought... Fittingly, in the middle of the afternoon, the organ came out gloriously under the deft fingers of Malcolm Sim with Olivier Messiaen's "Desseins Eternels"! Other pieces, among others by John Stanley (1712-1786), Bach and Rossini, stopped us in our tracks and kept us spellbound. It had started to rain outside but nevermind: under an umbrella we made our way to Glasgow's Presbyterian "Cathedral" and St Mungo's shrine. La Calle Art Gallery Vernissage... The abandoned house was shot by Life Pilgrim somewhere in Italy. The small village street is in Suchitoto, El Salvador. The flower pics are from my garden. Suchitoto Street and Flowers by Leon Verde. ============================== La Calle Art Gallery Project Being an amateur photographer and not having an art gallery to showcase my work, La Calle (The Street) seemed like the best place to put up my personal show. I started in the town of Suchitoto, El Salvador, but I can set up an exhibition anywhere in the world, provided that you give me a picture of a wall and the authorization to use it for this art project. You may contact me through my Flickrmail. Thanks.
